AtoAxis AI cost methodology

AtoAxis estimates usage cost from provider-reported token classes and the price that was effective when the event occurred. Missing prices produce an unknown estimate, not a zero.

What is recorded

A usage event contains identifiers, provider and model names, an event time and numeric token counts. Input, output, cache-read and cache-write tokens remain separate because providers can price each class differently.

Illustrative usage event
{
  "provider": "example-provider",
  "model": "example-model",
  "input_tokens": 1000000,
  "output_tokens": 500000,
  "token_source": "reported"
}

How the estimate is calculated

For every token class that the provider reports, AtoAxis multiplies the count by that class rate per million tokens, divides by 1,000,000 and adds the result in micro-USD. A class that is absent does not block the estimate; a reported class without a known rate makes the event cost unknown so a partial total cannot look complete.

Worked arithmetic — not a live price
Example rates (illustrative only):
input 1,000,000 × $3.00 / 1M = $3.00
output 500,000 × $15.00 / 1M = $7.50
estimated total = $10.50 = 10,500,000 micro-USD

Provider, model and effective date

The lookup matches both provider and model. It then selects the price window whose effective-from and effective-to dates contain the event timestamp. A later price change therefore does not silently rewrite an older event, and the pricing version can be inspected with the result.

  • The same model label at two providers is treated as two different price records.
  • A provider or model with no matching price remains unpriced.
  • A cache class with no rate makes cost unknown when that class is present.
  • Historical events keep the rate effective at their own event time.

Why unknown is not zero

A zero could mean free usage, missing usage, an unpriced provider or a genuinely zero count. Those cases are not equivalent. AtoAxis reports token usage when it has it and leaves estimated cost unavailable when the price evidence is incomplete, with coverage explaining how much of the range is priced.

Project totals and limitations

  • Usage is grouped by project when the session provides an unambiguous project context.
  • A session that spans several projects stays Unattributed instead of being copied into every project.
  • An estimate is not an invoice: negotiated rates, subscriptions and provider-side adjustments may be outside the visible data.
  • Prompt and response text are not required and are not stored in the usage event.

How does AtoAxis estimate AI cost from token usage?

For each reported token class, the count is multiplied by that class’s rate per million tokens at the price in force when the event happened. A missing price leaves the estimate unknown.

Key takeaways

Inputs:
Provider, model, event time and token counts per class.
Arithmetic:
Count × rate per million tokens ÷ 1,000,000, summed in micro-USD.
Price window:
The row whose effective dates contain the event timestamp.
Unknown:
No matching price row means unknown cost, never zero.

Why does a later price change not rewrite older events?

Illustrative example, not customer data: a model’s price changes on the first of a month. Events from the previous month keep the earlier rate, because the lookup selects the price window that contains each event’s timestamp. Only events after the change use the new rate.

Recommendation

Compare the token total, the priced-token coverage and the pricing version for the same range before quoting a cost. Treat a low priced coverage as missing price evidence, not as free usage.

Trade-offs to weigh

On the other hand, effective-dated prices are only as current as the price catalogue. A provider price change that has not been added yet leaves new usage priced as unknown until the catalogue is updated.

“A metric that cannot be established should say so instead of rendering as zero.”

AI cost methodology FAQ

Does the estimate equal my provider invoice?

No. It is based on reported usage and visible price rows; negotiated rates, subscriptions and provider adjustments may not be available.

What happens when a model price is unknown?

Token usage can remain visible, but the estimated cost is unavailable rather than reported as zero.

Why do cache tokens have their own fields?

Providers can price cache reads and writes differently from input and output, so combining them would hide the calculation.

Does AtoAxis store prompts to calculate cost?

No. The usage event needs numeric token counts and identifiers, not prompt or response text.
